Visual Anthropology conference – Creative Engagement with Crisis

On the occasion of the 17th RAI Film Festival 2021 we invite panel submissions from those working in the fields of visual anthropology, ethnographic film and adjacent disciplines, on any aspect of their research.

In particular, we would like to elicit responses on the theme ‘creative engagement with crisis’. As we write this call for panels crises appear to be everywhere – whether they be health, ecological, climatic, social, industrial, political, collective or personal. Whilst Covid-19 has catapulted us into an unprecedented global situation, anthropologists have been grappling with crises of various kinds and magnitudes well before this moment.

We therefore invite you to reflect on the notion of crises and the creative engagements they engender. How are the communities that visual anthropologists research with responding to the crises of our times? How might research work in film and related media help us to move beyond the disruption and despair to renew and rethink visual and sensory anthropology? What is the place of creativity, resilience, agency and hope in these responses?

We welcome different types of sessions such as debates, roundtables, workshops and other non-conventional formats – please include an indication of your preferred format in the long panel abstract.

A parallel call for films is open to those who wish to show work that exceeds the 20 minute slot allocated to each presentation: www.filmfreeway.com/RAIFilmFestival

Submit your panel proposal through this online form.
You will be required to submit a panel title, a short panel abstract (<300 characters including spaces) and a long panel abstract (<250 words)
