Call for applications for a fully funded PhD position in Social and
Cultural Anthropology at the Université libre de Bruxelles.
This doctoral fellowship is part of the project “Valuing Food Crops” funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (Research Grant 35282336).
Value discrepancies are key obstacles toward integrated agriculture
which is not rewarding in the capitalist economy overwhelmed by a highly
profitable agro-industry. While the value of crops is usually studied in
economic terms, the AgriValues also investigates the ethical values that
incentive farmers to perpetuate lively agricultural systems. This will
be achieved through an ethnographic inquiry into human-crop
companionship in a Peruvian centre of hyper agrobiodiversity. Beside
addressing critical questions regarding the sustainable feeding of an
increasing human population, this study of food crops appreciations
contends that agriculture offers a unique object to overcome the current
split between the economic and the ethical studies on value.
The successful candidate will conduct an ethnographic investigation on
highland agricultural practices in the Cuzco region. The fellowship
covers a period of 4 years on a full-time basis, starting on the 1st of
June 2020, as latest. The candidate will affiliate her-/himself with the
Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences at the Université libre de
Bruxelles. He/she should be prepared to settle in Belgium, and conduct
extensive fieldwork in Peru. Applicants should hold an excellent MA in
anthropology, sociology, philosophy, geography, or other related
disciplines (agronomy is also appreciated if strong interest in social
sciences is manifest). Proficiency in English or French is required,
basic knowledge in Spanish is an asset. Excellent writing capacities are
