Título: “Evans-Pritchard and the crystallisation of Social Anthropology”.
Resumo: “We are all familiar with the great works of Evans-Pritchard, which remain canonical within our discipline. How though, did he become an anthropologist? Was his way into the profession straightforward? The first part of this lecture will be devoted to exploring this question. Our findings, however, are rather surprising. They illustrate that E-P was deftly helped by various figures who have been overlooked in the historiography of our discipline, particularly R. R. Marett, who was Rector of Exeter College, Oxford. I extrapolate from this to suggest how we need to reconsider the past of social anthropology, and the moment of its coming into being as a distinct discipline”.
Nota biográfica: David Shankland is a social anthropologist whose research divides into several categories: the social anthropology and history of modern Turkey, in particular the study of the relationship between religion, politics, and economics.
