The Department of Anthropology and the AISSR at the University of Amsterdam are seeking a research/editorial assistant with excellent people and time management skills.
Job description
The assistant will support the management of an anthropological research team investigating transformations in gender roles and relations in contemporary urban Africa. This job also entails spending approximately one day a week working as an editorial assistant for the academic journal,_Medicine Anthropology Theory_. Though not a requirement, employees with experience and/or interest in the stated research focus are encouraged to apply.
Tasks will include:
* coordinating team research and study activities;
* liaising with research team;
* assisting international team members to navigate state and university bureaucracy regarding housing, residency permits, etc.;
* assisting to write research reports for funders;
* tracking project finances;
* assisting with ‘backend’ production of academic journal: formatting, uploading to website, etc.;
* supporting the team leader, Dr. Eileen Moyer, as personal research assistant when time permits, i.e., literature reviews, interview transcriptions, preliminary data analysis, managing RefWorks database.
Requirements
Successful applicants will have a:
* MA degree in the social sciences or comparable (2015-2016 MA students may also apply);
* excellent English communication skills (written and spoken);
* sufficient knowledge of Dutch to navigate university bureaucracy (or willingness to learn);
* familiarity with MS Office a must, and preferably with RefWorks, Nvivo, and OJS (open journal systems);
* ability to manage online documents via Dropbox and Google Drive;
* experience conducting literature reviews;
* willingness to travel internationally on occasional work-related activities.

Appointment
This is a part-time appointment for 20 hours per week and initially a period of one year, starting on 1 September 2015. A review will take place after six months; if the employee is positively evaluated, the contract will be extended for another additional 24 and possibly up to 36 months. With the exception of short holidays, the research assistant is expected to be available during the entire academic year (September to June). Depending on previous experience, the gross monthly salary will be at salary scale 6 ranging between €1,882 and €2,532 (scale 6) in the case of a full-time position (38 hrs / week). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of year bonus.
