RESEARCH POSITIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH

The Health Ethics and Policy Lab at the University of Zurich has been awarded a Swiss National Science Foundation grant to explore ethical issues related to the uses of Big Data in health research. The Project BEHALF (Bigdata-Ethics-Health Framework) aims to explore ethical challenges in the current oversight approaches to big data research and to develop approaches that address the specific ethical issues that continue to emerge within the expanding health data ecosystem. A detailed description of the project is available in the SNSFs website. This project is a collaboration with the University of Geneva. We are currently offering a post-doctoral and a PhD position in Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Effy Vayena.

1. POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH (60-70% FOR 18
MONTHS, WITH

POTENTIAL FOR EXTENSION)

The successful applicant will be conducting research on the ethical challenges of big data in the context of medical and clinical research. Specific areas of focus are informed consent and risk-benefit analysis. The research plan includes normative analysis, a qualitative research project and stakeholder analysis, as well as the organization of stakeholder workshop. We are looking for a dynamic, committed and enthusiastic scholar who is interested in joining an interdisciplinary
team.

Qualification:
• PhD in bioethics, law, ethics, social sciences, or related area. Experience in research ethics, and in ethical review of research projects is an asset.
• Strong motivation and interest in research ethics, big data applications in health and digital health more broadly.
• Proficiency in English and either German or French.
• Excellent writing skills in English.

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated capacity to independently plan and conduct a research project; a proven track record in delivering research outputs of high academic quality; capacity to produce policy-oriented research products.

2. PHD POSITION IN HEALTH POLICY AND ETHICS

The candidate will conduct research on the ethical challenges of big data applications in health research. The research project includes scoping reviews, qualitative research and policy analysis. The candidate will join the PhD program in Epidemiology of the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (University of Zurich) with a focus on Health Policy and Ethics and will be supervised by Prof. Effy Vayena.

Requirements:
• A strong interest in biomedical ethics and digital health
• MSc in bioethics, law (LLM), social sciences, natural sciences,
medicine or other related field
• Proficiency in English and either German or French
• Excellent writing skills in English
• Interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment
