The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (SAME) at the University of Oxford is inviting applications for a 4-year postdoctoral Research Fellowship as part of the new Oxford Net Zero initiative.
Oxford Net Zero explores how to reach global ‘net zero’ in time to halt global warming. This includes both drastic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and the scaling up of options to remove and safely store greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
The implementation of ‘net zero’ policies is bound to have a profound impact around the world. Specifically, the prospect of removing greenhouse gases at scale opens ups a new set of urgent questions about the impact these interventions might have in different regions and communities, their relationship to existing livelihoods, or their alignment with sustainable development goals. Exploring these questions empirically is essential to the formulation of equitable policies.
The Research Fellow, based at the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (InSIS) within SAME, will develop a research programme under the rubric Inclusive Net Zero. This programme will focus on the interplay between global net zero policies and the cultural, socio-political and developmental realities of regions and communities in the global South. Our aim is to produce definitions of ‘net zero’ that are congruent with the specific vulnerabilities, priorities, histories, and capabilities of low-income countries and/or traditionally disadvantaged communities.
In addition to being a member of the Oxford Net Zero initiative, the Research Fellow will contribute to research and teaching on the anthropology of environmental and climate change at SAME. Oxford hosts a vibrant community of Anthropology researchers and students exploring climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the Oxford Net Zero Research Fellow will play a critical role in catalysing these efforts.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Javier Lezaun (InSIS) and Dr Radhika Khosla (School of Geography and the Environment, SoGE). Applications are particularly welcome and encouraged from women candidates and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
