Short abstract:
This panel aims to discuss in a broad context the interactions between human activities,
environments and non-human animals in the African continent, taking into account the general intensification of global and local human impacts on natural habitats of the last centuries.
Long abstract:
The African continent has undergone a huge modification of its ecosystems with soil erosion, deforestation, desertification and loss or great reduction of many animal species. This high rate of biodiversity loss from habitat destruction, chemical pollution and invasive species will accelerate in the coming 30 years as a result of climate change and growing human populations. According to the FAO, ―Africa lost the highest percentage of tropical forests of any continent during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s‖. By 2050, this continent is expected to lose 50% of its birds and mammals. The loss of natural habitats and biodiversity greatly affected economic, social and political issues in Africa, with a consequent intensification of the struggle for natural resources among native communities that eventually force people to emigrate. The reduction of natural habitats has also led to a constant increase in the conflict between wildlife and human populations, especially because the constant expansion and development of modern agriculture. The local dimension of natural resource use of the past is now substitute by a major exploitation that involves international forces such as the global market which often contributed in the degradation of local communities‘ dynamics and cultures. This panel would like to encourage an open discussion about these important topics where every work involving African environmental issues is welcomed.
