The Weltkulturen Museum is active at the intersection of cultural and social anthropology and art, promoting transcultural exchange and engaging in international dialogue with Indigenous and non-Indigenous societies. It is committed to preserving its collections and undertaking research and critical re-appraisals of them. The museum realises exhibitions, cultural events and interdisciplinary projects involving research and cooperation through a process of mutual exchange with societies of origin, artists and scholars. As a Stadt Frankfurt museum it unites local and global discussions and plays a significant role in decolonisation processes.
With a starting date of 1 May 2025, we are hiring a Research associate (f/m/d) to manage the Americas Collection
Full-time, part- time
Your tasks would include:
Undertaking the scholarly management of the Americas Collection and its
continuing development, as well as the in-depth digital cataloguing of the
collection’s holdings, conducting provenance research and dealing with
subject-specific enquiries.
Collaborating on the ongoing development of the museum’s profile,
continuing to position the museum and its (future) locations within the urban
community / as part of the city’s museum scene.
Devising, realising, participating in and taking over exhibitions, as well as their
accompanying publications and programmes, and independently calculating
their budgets.
Setting up and continuing the museum’s cooperative partnerships with
actors from the collections’ countries of origin and with the diaspora
communities for the purposes of evaluating the collection, conducting
provenance research, and producing exhibitions, publications and events.
Devising and conducting cooperative research projects.
Involvement in obtaining / applying for public funding, external funding,
and tendering procedures; reaching out to sponsors in consultation with
the director.
Involvement in educational work (tours, talks,) and public
relations.
- Your profile:
University graduate with a Master’s or Magister Artium degree in cultural
and social anthropology, cultural studies or a related discipline with a
regional focus on the Americas.
Excellent knowledge of the current debates concerning cultural and social
anthropology, cultural theory and art history with a particular focus on
Indigenous and African-American communities in North and South America;
interested in interdisciplinary work.
Excellent knowledge of postcolonial debates; interested
in socio-political issues.
Experienced in scholarly and curatorial work on collections.
Knowledge of provenance research and digitally cataloguing collection
holdings.
Experienced in devising and realising exhibitions, incorporating
administering budgets and obtaining external funding.
Excellent communication skills and competent at communicating
complex content to diverse audiences. - A creative-minded team player who is prepared to do some occasional pre-
planned evening and weekend work (e.g. setting up exhibitions, - evening/weekend events at the museum).
German language skills equivalent to C1 in the European Language
Framework (GER), excellent written and spoken English and good
Spanish and Portuguese also required.
A self-starter and talented organiser.
Possessing intercultural and gender competence.
