Qualitative Researcher
Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences – University of Oxford
Fixed term post on Grade 7: £32,817 – £40,322 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Qualitative Researcher to fill a new 18 month post funded by the ESRC to improve understanding of the diversity of ways in which patients have experienced COVID-19. The coming months provide a critical opportunity to capture and learn from people’s narratives, including how they make sense (or struggle to make sense) of what has happened to them and their perspectives on what could have been different. We will document and understand experiences of living through COVID-19 and then apply that understanding of the diversity of experience to provide public-facing resources for information and support.

The successful applicant will use in-depth interviews and qualitative analysis to study experiences of people who have had COVID-19. We anticipate that much of the work will now be online/virtual but some face-to-face interviews may be possible. Analysis of these interviews will be used to publish a new section on the award-winning platform Heathtalk.org, develop resources to stimulate design discussions with stakeholders and contribute to a cross-country comparative qualitative analysis of COVID-19 experiences.

The post-holder will join the Medical Sociology and Health Experiences Research Group within the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, co-led by Prof. Sue Ziebland. The wider project team includes; Prof. Louise Locock (University of Aberdeen), Dr. Kaveri Qureshi (University of Edinburgh), Dr. Jenny Douglas (The Open University), Dr. Lisa Hinton (University of Cambridge) and others, collaborating with the DIPEx charity who run and maintain the Healthtalk.org platform.

The appointee will be a qualitative social scientist with significant proven expertise in qualitative methods. You will have a high level of communication and writing skills appropriate for different audiences, and be able to work closely with other team members. You will require a high degree of autonomy and have the ability to work sensitively and develop rapport and trust with research participants from different backgrounds. The post holder will be required to think creatively to develop further resources for other stakeholders.

You will be based in the Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG.

The post is funded for 18 months from 20th November 2020, we would like the post-holder to start as soon after this date as possible. Further information regarding the role can be obtained from Prof. Sue Ziebland (sue.ziebland@phc.ox.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 12pm on Thursday 10th December 2020.

Interviews will be held on Wednesday 16th December 2020.
